The Galactic Radiation and Background Experiment (GRAB) is launched on a Thor Able Star two-stage rocket. GRAB is the earliest space-based reconnaissance satellite and the first US Navy ELINT satellite used to obtain information on Soviet air defense radars, which otherwise could not be observed from US military aircraft. This is one of Howard O. Lorenzen’s most notable achievements.
