Description: How are recent global conflicts reshaping the future of electromagnetic spectrum operations? During this 4-hour workshop, Dr. Shawana P. Johnson, GISP, a subject matter expert focused on geospatial intelligence and emerging technologies, will examine critical lessons learned from world events—most notably, the Russia-Ukraine war—and their profound impact on AI, communications, and geospatial technologies within the spectrum domain.

Who Should Attend: This session is designed for individuals interested in learning about what the commercial technology space has to offer defense professionals, technologists, and strategic planners looking to stay ahead of the curve in an increasingly contested and technology-driven spectrum environment focused on new and upcoming commercial technologies.

Instructor

Dr. Shawana P. Johnson, GISP, is a global commercial remote sensing and geospatial subject matter expert providing Geospatial Business Intelligence Expertise™ assisting government clients with the vast range of data available from open source intelligence and commercial Spaceborne, Airborne and Terrestrial based Sensors and their Interoperability with the Government and Global Business community focused on AI/ML usage of sensors for earth observation and 5G Communications. Her applied science focus is on National Security, Energy Resources, Agriculture and Water Sustainability; and Logistics and Supply Chain. Dr. Johnson has worked with 2 person startups to spin off from National Labs to multi-thousand-person defense contractors by assisting them in growing their market capabilities focused on products and services  delivery regardless of market sector. She has work with over 180 countries and that experience coupled with her global 5G and geospatial contacts globally provides real user input for client market growth, and application success. Her expertise encompasses interacting with global ground stations, launch providers, satellite developers and managers, defense contracting and acquisition organizations, National Labs, and hundreds of small and mid-sized geospatial value-added organizations. Dr. Johnson was a keynote speaker at AOC May 2025 Rome, Italy and most recently led a commercial technology and spectrum panel at AOC: Space Resiliency Summit, Bedford MA June, 2025. 2022 finalist as a Tradecraft Specialist for the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation GEOINT. Dr. Johnson was a 2022 main stage presenter focused on the “Eminent Threat faced by China’s Domination of 5G”. She was nominated, sponsored and awarded a certificate of completion for the Senior Managers in Government Program, 8/2019, John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Executive Education and received her Doctorate Degree in Management from Case Western Reserve University, The Weatherhead School of Management; Cleveland, Ohio in 1998 focused on Economics and Technology Transfer and is currently certified by The GIS Certification Institute, Park Ridge, Illinois – as a Geographic Business Information Systems Professional (GISP), 2007, 2012, 2018. Dr. Johnson is a Global Subject Matter Expert in the Geospatial Industry and advises the Commercial as well as Intelligence Community sectors. She is an advocate for the Geospatial Industry and is a well-known speaker and has authored many geospatial industry specific articles, white papers and book chapters. She serves on multiple industry boards, government committees, and associations which serve to advance the science of communications, remote sensing and geospatial technology and mentors over 30 young professionals a year.
