MIMO Radars – Whatever You Can Do, We Can Do


This webinar will compare and contrast the ground and airborne based MIMO architectures and conventional radars and explore the expected advantages and achievable results for the different implementations.

MIMO ground-based radars use a thin linear array on transmit and collocated full linear array on receive. This thin/full MIMO array has been proven to provide orders of magnitude better resolution and accuracy (up to 1000x) than conventional radars. Conventional radars can be demonstrated to achieve similar performance with no grating lobes using exactly the same time and energy for search without the signal processing load of the MIMO radar. While originally comparing full/thin array for both architectures, the roles are then reversed with full array transmitting and thin array receiving to study the respective results and assess performance for different situations.

MIMO airborne GMTI radar can provide a better minimum detectable velocity (MDV) than a conventional one. Here again a thin/full array is considered for the MIMO and full array for the conventional. This presentation will show how a thin/full array conventional system can be used to provide the same advantages as the MIMO system relative to coherent dwell time and aperture size and should provide the same MDV.
