Hands-on Introduction to Radar and EW Course

Hands-on Introduction to Radar and EW Course

  • Friday, December 01, 2017 09:00 until Saturday, December 02, 2017 17:00

Course Location:

Marriott Marquis, Washington DC

This course will provide a hands-on introduction to radar and a number of important EW concepts. Unlike other such courses, the emphasis will be on allowing attendees to perform experiments using an audio sonar to actually experience the effects and implications of various radar and EW concepts. So rather than only having abstract concepts such as Doppler ambiguities and their relationship to PRF explained in theory, attendees will be able to experiment with different target velocities and PRFs to see how they interact in practice. In this way, attendees will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the relevant concepts than would be possible with a purely lecture-based format.

Attendees must bring their own computers so that the relevant software can be set up on their computers and used after the course has ended. Speakers and microphones will be provided.

Registration for courses in conjunction with the 54th Annual AOC International Symposium & Convention are handled through our event registration portal. You do not need to attend the symposium & convention to register for this course.

Some comments from Dr du Plessis' webinars:

  • “Wish I had viewed this 35 years ago. Great Job!”

  • “This lecture is the best I heard for two decades!”

  • “Really good! But what made it so relevant was the examples provided.”

  • “Excellent and thought provoking.”

  • “Very interesting brief. Never would have thought about this issue without this brief.”

Concepts which will be covered in this course include the topics listed below.

  • How radar works

  • Determining target range

  • Determining target velocity

  • Minimising clutter effects

  • Minimum range of a pulsed radar

  • Range-Doppler maps

  • Range and Doppler resolution

  • Pulse compression

  • Range and Doppler ambiguities

  • Low, medium and high-PRF systems

  • Stealth

  • Matched and mismatched filtering

  • Beamwidth versus sidelobes

  • CFAR

  • Detecting radar signals

  • LPD and LPI radar

  • Noise jamming

  • Multiple false targets

  • Range- and velocity-gate pull off

  • Cover pulse jamming

Intended Audience

This course will assume that attendees have no background in radar and EW, so anybody with an interest in these topics will be most welcome.  However, the hands-on experiment-based approach means that people who have knowledge of the relevant fields can still benefit by building a better feeling for how everything works and fits together.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be submitted no later than 2 weeks prior to the cancelled session.  Cancellations may be faxed to (703) 549-2589 or emailed to events@crows.org.  Refunds will be issued for cancellations received by the due date minus a $50 administrative fee.
